The Woman in Black

Literary critics rarely use this last term, preferring to talk of the "narrator". But when it comes to hauntings this traditional description is fitting. Arthur Kipps is giving us a tale that he is condemned by his own memories to tell. When the novella opens, he is a man in late middle age, surrounded by adult stepchildren at Christmas. Naturally they begin to tell ghost stories: Christmas is the time for this, when the year is darkest and family or friends are gathered together to be entertained.

Because there, at the very end, there was a lovely arch, on which was written in curly letters Model Gowns. Written by a superb novelist of contemporary manners, The Women in Black is a fairytale which illuminates the extraordinariness of ordinary lives. The women in black are run off their feet, what with the Christmas rush and the summer sales that follow. With the lightest touch and the most tender of comic instincts, Madeleine St John conjures a vanished summer of innocence. The Women in Black is a great novel, a lost Australian classic.

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

So: what did I learn? Apart from the fact that I now need a course of counselling. The core story the film takes some liberties with other details and completely refashions the ending follows young solicitor Arthur Kipps as he travels to the remote Eel Marsh House to sift through the documents of late client Alice Drablow. The woman in black puts in some heart-stopping appearances herself frankly, the black-clad usher materialising silently at my elbow at one point scared the wits out of me. And the sound effects are guaranteed to have the audience screaming. I admit, the price of a ticket these days can be as terrifying as a malevolent spirit. But the film itself more than compensated for anything I lost in atmosphere sensed from those around me. And with far fewer laughs than the play, you feel constantly on edge.

Without it, readers run the risk of being un-traumatized by this post and what is the fun in that, I ask you?! My favorite horror movie changes daily according to mood. I'm a huge horror fan but most of the movies are disappointing of late. For the most part I thought they worked and love Courtney's post!

There are undertakers with shovels, of course, a local official who would rather be anywhere else, and one Mr Arthur Kipps, solicitor from London.

An internationally acclaimed and haunting ghost story. Arthur Kipps, a young solicitor, has come north from London to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Irresistibly dramatic… Susan Hill has done the genre real honour. For my money, the greatest of the contemporary ghost writers. Hill creates believable period characters, she creates a hermetic world that yet speaks of wider superstitions and histories, and creates plots with tension, pace and jeopardy without ever becoming heavy-handed.

About Text

This book was one that was on my wishlist for many years! And when it came to sitting down and reading it , well I will admit I was a little dubious. It starts of describing this young man with a tragic past. It sent a chill down my spine when he first sets eyes on the mysterious woman dressed in black with the I'll looking face. The scares are subtley slotted into the early parts of the novel.

Jun 21, - We believe that because The Woman in Black's story has been told, she can finally rest. But a few years later, when Arthur is settled into his first.
