Kimberly: We have Katelyn on the line, our lovely general manager of Solluna, who we recently had some big life changes. She got married. How are you doing, K? As always, I really enjoy the time we get to spend together doing the podcast. So I love looking at the questions and connecting with the community.

All right, guys. This is a big one. Katelyn: Yeah. So we have Brooklyn living in New York. Katelyn: Oh, yeah, I was confused too, but no. Brooklyn living in New York. Do you remember, K? Kimberly: Yeah. It was starting to crank up. I used to live in New York, so I deeply feel connected to it still. So first thing, I just want to acknowledge that and give you a big hug, Brooklyn out in New York.

A couple things I want to say about this, anxiety in general is tied to future based thinking. If we stay really present as much as we can with what is in front of us, then we can release the anxiety and the worry. What if I die? What if a loved one gets sick? Whatever the thoughts are, these are all what ifs.

So what we have to do is keep coming back to the present and do what we can in the present moment. So what are some of the things we can do in the present moment? We can take the appropriate precautions, everything recommended by the CDC. If you are out, wear either a bought or a created mask with a handkerchief. Wash your hands. Go out as little as possible. If you do have to go groceries, try to get it delivery, or go early in the morning.

Secondly, the being on the news a lot is definitely going to fuel anxiety. I definitely turn off those sorts of alerts. It just feels very intrusive to me, the noise and the visual. So for me, I just look at headlines. And that feels not as anxiety provoking as the television. Kimberly: And number three, I think that this is a really important exercise , Brooklyn, in how what your relationship is with being present.

And in some way, and one thing we can do is strengthen our relationship with the present. This is a great time to focus on your breath, breath work , meditation. Take advantage of whatever resonates with you. When you start to feel that anxiety coming, you want to get into your body. You want to get out of the future based thinking. You want to get out of the overthinking mind. You want to drop back into your body. You want to go deeper, deeper than the thoughts. You want to go into the spaciousness of the present moment.

Kimberly: Remind yourself that whatever happens, you will deal with it from a rational place. You will do your best. Worst case scenario, something happens, you will deal with it. We have a grounding meditation that would be really good for you. I think we have it on the website now, K, in the meditation section, which is where you feel your legs.

You feel your feet connected with the earth. You feel your hips on the seat, on the chair. And you can feel your body right here, right now. And if we can start to put attention on this moment, on this breath, the very, very presence of being here, then that really helps the anxiety cycle, which again is in our thoughts. Kimberly: So any sort of presence practice you can bring in before you eat, take a moment to pause and be grateful. Have a gratitude practice or grace. Be present with your food.

Try not to multitask. Just bring presence into your life, and I think that will really help you start to feel calmer and getting out of that worry mentality. Katelyn: Click away, just to know, I know where that is. And you could bookmark things on your computers. You could easily find them later. Kimberly: And sometimes it could be that soothing song, like if you have a playlist of your favorite songs on Spotify, or like you said, K, a bookmark to a led meditation.

Kimberly Pullman: A Canadian Woman Lured Over the Internet to the ISIS Caliphate

Her overarching research and academic interests are focused on maximising human health, wellbeing and performance in both normal and extreme environments. Kimberley is a psychological scientist and clinical psychologist who works across academic, research, and clinical psychology practice settings. Her research interests include adaptation and resilience in both extreme e. Kimberley is looking to develop new and innovative ways to provide psychological support for individuals in remote, rural, maritime and extreme environments at an individual, organisational, and familial level. Kimberley is also an active researcher in supporting parents of children with mental health issues, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Downs Syndrome. More recently, Kimberley's research interests have expanded to include methods for assessment and intervention in family violence, and assessment and intervention for cognitive and behavioural difficulties experienced by preterm children throughout their academic lives. From an academic perspective, Kimberley's research focuses on achievement behaviour as well as teaching and learning innovations in university contexts. Kimberley maintains collaborations with national and international researchers focused on human health and performance in Antarctica. Kimberley publishes on topics including mental health, adaptation and resilience, family and interpersonal violence, teaching and learning scholarship, and extreme environments.
