I was hoping you might be able to provide some advice. My younger brother has travelled from Australia to visit me in London, and is now in Rome on his very first trip to Europe He's quite shy, and I think he was hoping to meet people at the hostel he is staying at, but it's turned out his hostel is just a few beds thrown into a tiny apartment.

Good ol' Rome. Anyway, I'm trying to find some good places for him to go where he might meet a few people. He would never say it out aloud, but I know he's feeling a little bit overwhelmed and lonely he's barely been outside our home town before, let alone a non-English speaking country before I've found a few pub crawls that sound rather salubrious which I thought could be a possibility?

Has anyone been on one? Are they really awful? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Any advice would be hugely appreciated. He needs to go where other English speakers are. Angel Tours offers a free tour of the Pantheon every night at 7.

There are bound to be others there. Enjoy Rome offices on Via Marghera has English speaking tours that are usually filled with young, English speakers. Rome is a very friendly place. Even if he just goes into a cafe or strikes up a conversation with people standing in front of a site he'll meet people. He has to put himself out there which is the biggest problem. I find that by offering to take pictures of people when there's a group and one is always left out of the shot is a great way to start up a converstation.

And sometimes, it's good to be alone. To wander and look at things or just sit and watch and be with yourself. I was just in Rome, for 7 days, mostly by myself. I always had a notebook with me to jot my thoughts and a regular book to read. It was very friendly and there were a lot of English speakers there. The pub crawl option is a good one! Of course it's a bit daggy to do an organised pub crawl but when travelling alone it can be hard to meet people and it can be a bit hard, depending on one's personality.

I did a pub crawl when I was in Rome alone a few years ago I don't remember the name of it, but I think we met at the spanish steps and I met loads of people!

I was in Rome this summer and on my first day I met promoters for one of the pub crawls there. I went there on the same night and had a blast.

The party was great and I met lots of fun people. The best part was that I met 2 girls who were also just arrived in Rome and we discovered that our hostels are right next to each other and I spent most of the other days with them to visit all the famous and wonderful sites in Rome.

So I'm very glad I went to this party. The pub crawl I went started outside of the Colosseum metro stop, so it was very easy to find it and get there. This topic has been locked by a moderator. After three millennia of being governed by men, Rome elected its first female mayor in June, year-old Virginia Raggi, an intellectual-property lawyer and activist who ran as a candidate for the populist Five Star Movement M5S. The women of Rome have been making headway in business and politics and are subtly reshaping the city in their image, from billboards to boardrooms.
