Postcards from George Town, Penang

Once upon a time, in a Thai restaurant which was “hot” favourite of me and my wife, we used to order Penang curry when we were tired of Red/Yellow/Green.We assumed Penang was a part of Thailand. How silly of us.Once in Singapore we understood that the soul of the Singaporean foodie is perpetually stranded in Penang, Malaysia. Now if the residents of this food obsessed country hanker for a gastronomy dominated trip to Penang there has to be something special. The fact that George Town is a UNESCO world heritage site also added considerably to its allure. So one Friday evening we set out for Penang salivating at the treats awaiting us.

But George Town turned out to be much more than a foodies paradise (it has been named among the top ten places in the world for food). In fact it is nothing short of a little hidden miracle. The heritage zone is wonderfully preserved, the number and beauty of the colonial buildings is mind-boggling and every by-lane oozes atmosphere and character, not to mention divine eateries. The timelessness of a place like George Town is best captured in glorious black and white, which is what I have tried to do.

  1. Penang fully deserves the nickname “Pearl of the Orient”. A wonderful cosmopolitan town with a quaint old world charm, Penang holds a lot of promises.

Love to hear from you....
