Din Tai Fung

When we landed on the shores of Singapore last year we were told by our old friends that there is a restaurant in this food wonderland of a city state, where we are remembered every time they eat there. We were both flattered and curious. As it turned out the place was Din Tai Fung.It started in Taiwan, specialising in xiaolongbao (small steamed buns).Normally a traditional dim sum eatery hardly serves any vegetarian fare but we decided to give it a shot.We were pleasantly surprised to find a small selection of absolutely divine dishes. We returned emboldened and tried a few other dishes including their famed pork dumpling, now that was a big leap of faith for us Kolkata Marwaris, but the rewards were indeed heavenly. Now its a default option for us and never mind the hour long wait, at any outlet across Singapore. One day I hope to visit the considerably humble outlet were it all started in Taiwan and I suspect the waiting time there will be much longer.Din Tai Fung has been awarded a Michelin star(something that turns me off, my worst gastronomic disasters have happened all over France) and ranked among the top ten restaurants in the world by New York Times. The last time we were there with friends during the Chinese New Year, I tried to capture the magic of the place through my lens. Here are a few highlights:

The characters in the name mean: 鼎, a type of cooking cauldron; 泰, peaceful; and 豐, abundant.

  1. Splendid. Have said before … Amit’s “captures” do not need text. The snaps are words enough

  2. Hope you have had enjoy your stay in Singapore. Thanks for following my blog.

  3. Excellent pictures.. only problem is that it made me hungry and started a craving to go back to Din Tai Fung. Was introduced to this place a few years back on a business trip to Taiwan. Bless my colleague for introducing me to this place.

Some “facts” that I picked up during my first visit:

xiao long bao: translates exactly to little dragon buns..
every helping, be it a dumpling or a salad gets weighed before its sent out, on an actual scale !!!

Love to hear from you....
